My mom has always said, “You become who you hang around.” Such true words! Think about the influence our friends or acquaintances have on us; hey lift us up to their level . . . or drag our asses down. Misery loves company, but not our company! We’ve got goals to accomplish and real friends by our side to help us obtain them.
There’s been a lot of insightful sayings in my family, so let’s pretend you’re at my Sunday dinner. Another serving of veggies for you? Okay, kidding, couldn’t help myself. Grandpa would look dead in your eyes, “You choose your friends, you choose your future! Now what’s it going to be?” My cousins and I would laugh as kids, but man, this makes so much sense. Surrounding yourself with friends who have a positive outlook, set goals, work out of their comfort zone, and always strive for greatness will have a huge impact on all those areas of your life too!
The company you keep, keeps your thoughts and actions in a certain direction. When working as a performer and entrepreneur, it is vital to keep those thoughts and actions positive, and forward moving. When you set goals, your friends are there to hold you accountable, offer suggestions for taking them one step further, and, hopefully, share shortcuts from their experiences.
There’s always going to be opportunities to slack off, dick around, not take your work seriously—and those are the results you will get. It might not be their intention, but some friends have a skewed focus and distract themselves from doing the hard stuff with well . . . maybe other hard stuff. Alcohol, drugs, mindless TV—fill in the blank with whatever vice and if you’re surrounded with that company long enough, that behavior could become yours too.
Stay strong. Value yourself and the amazing work you’re doing. Your time is precious, spend it with precious people. I love the saying, “Work begets work,” because it is damn true! Say yes to positive opportunities that are in line with your goals; this builds confidence, relationships, skills, and, of course, tells the Universe to bring more of that into your life. Yeah, I just got a bit granola on you!
Drop anything that doesn’t serve you, ranging from thoughts, activities, people, to even physical things in your environment that don’t lift you up and make you happy. Surround yourself with the stars and A-list company, and together we’ll bring the vibration of the world higher. You have talent that deserve to shine!
