Strike a Balance!

Whether an athlete needs better control in their sport or a mom is juggling the kids while doing the housework, balance exercises are an important part of preparing our bodies for the unexpected and to ensure a greater range of activity as we age. Standard strength training or cardio programs primarily use the large muscles you can see without targeting the deep, tiny stabilizing muscles that lie hidden beneath. These anchor posture, giving better control and support to general movement. Simple balance exercises can also bring confidence to seniors by guarding against unsteadiness and falls. Such exercises include moving an arm or leg away from your midline and can be done kneeling or standing. Progress by using an unstable surface or add hand weights for maximum challenge.
